Sometimes, I guess you have to beat you own drum. Having started in this business almost 25 years ago as a client, I think I have a unique perspective on hair replacement in San Diego. There is no other major hair replacement San Diego company whose owner is also a client. If you have not lost your hair and have done something about it, you cannot understand what is like to make the decision to finally do something about your hair loss. You also cannot empathize with your clients and potential clients if you have not lost your hair. Some Facts About Hair Loss in Men and Women-Medical and Physical Causes

Low Serum Iron – Iron deficiency occasionally produces hair loss. Some people don’t have enough iron in their diets or may not fully absorb iron. Women who have heavy menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency. Low iron can be detected by laboratory tests and can be corrected by taking iron pills.
Major Surgery/Chronic Illness – Anyone who has a major operation may notice increased hair shedding within one to three months afterwards. The condition reverses itself within a few months but people who have a severe chronic illness may shed hair indefinitely.
Fungus Infection (Ringworm) of the Scalp – Caused by a fungus infection, ringworm (which has nothing to do with worms) begins with small patches of scaling that can spread and result in broken hair, redness, swelling, and even oozing. This contagious disease is most common in children, and oral medication will cure it. Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania) – Children and sometimes adults will twist or pull their hair, brows, or lashes until they come out. In children especially, this was often considered just a bad habit, this is not the case at all. Trichotillomania (trich) is said to be a chemical imbalance in the brain. Though not much is known about this disorder or condition, it has been ruled out that it is not a bad habit but a sign of a serious problem needing the help of a health professional.

Medical- Another common cause of hair loss is chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments. Chemotherapy drugs designed to poison cancer cells also poison the hair follicles and will often result in total baldness. Hair loss from chemotherapy treatments is not permanent and hair will generally grow back within 6-12 months. It may grow back thinner and perhaps a different color, but will eventually return to its original thickness and shade. Certain medications and diseases will also affect hair growth and loss.

I have been in hair replacement for almost twenty-five years. I started as a client back in the 80′s. I decided to finally do something about my hair loss when I saw a friend of mine. I normally got together with him weekly. I noticed one day that there was something different about him. I could not put my finger on it. He looked better. So knowing him well, I just asked him why something was different? He said ” It is my hair, stupid”. Wow, he looked great. I knew that he had transplants previously and they did not look that great. Heck, after looking at him, I decided to take care of my hair concern. The techniques and technology has changed so much in the last twenty years. I feel that if you are losing your hair now you are lucky. Don’t get me wrong. You are not lucky that you are losing your hair. You are lucky because of the options like Virtual Reality, Virtuese and Sensigraft that are available to you know. It is not the dark ages anymore! Normal Hair Growth
About 90 percent of the hair on a person’s scalp is growing at any one time. The growth phase lasts between two and six years. Ten percent of the hair is in a resting phase that lasts two tothree months. At the end of its resting stage, the hair is shed. When a hair is shed, a new hair from the same follicle replaces it and the growing cycle starts again. Scalp hair grows about one-half inch a month. As people age, their rate of hair growth slows. Natural blondes typically have more hair (140,000 hairs) than brunettes (105,000 hairs) or redheads (90,000 hairs). Most hair shedding is due to the normal hair cycle, and losing 50-to-100 hairs per day is no cause for alarm. However, if you are concerned about excessive hair loss or dramatic thinning, consult your dermatologist.

Though humans no longer make use of hair for protection, heat retention, or camouflage, it still remains a very important means by which individuals display and are recognized. Appropriate appearance and grooming are still very important in social organization and the human relationships.

The human body contains approximately five million hair follicles while the scalp (prior to any kind of hair loss) contains 100,000-150,000 hair follicles. Blondes have the greatest number of scalp follicles, followed by brunettes. Humans with red hair have the fewest number of scalp follicles. The normal growth rate of scalp hair is one-fourth to one-half inch per month.

Wow, does hair make a difference in this job market. I hear almost every day how much having hair has made a difference in their lives. Personally and professionally. It is sad that some people spend years worrying about their hair loss when there are great options available. Having hair again is such a positive experience. Our society demands it, especially for women. No one wants to be know as the bald guy or thinning women. There is no better time than now. If you think about your hair loss a couple times a week or more, it is time. And it is fun!

Hair Loss in Men Under 21

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons has published an article on hair loss in young men before the age of 21. They pose the question: “Is Hair Transplantation the Answer?” Because hair loss is generally unexpected before age 21 it can be a shock for a young man 15 to 20 years old to discover he is losing his hair.

The article goes on to state that hair loss before age 21 can be very disturbing for a young man, even if he expects to eventually undergo hair loss similar to other male members of his family. Loss of hair at this psychologically and emotionally vulnerable time in his life can leave him feeling disfigured, less attractive socially, and hindered in the job market. He can be an easy target for expensive but ineffective “miracle cures” advertised in print media, on TV and on the Internet.

EXCELLENT ADVICE

What should a young man do if he begins to lose hair before age 21? A good first step is consultation with a physician hair restoration specialist who is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). A physician member of ISHRS is skilled and experienced, and most importantly, follows ethical guidelines that make the needs of the patient the physician’s primary concern.

Ethical considerations are especially important when the patient is vulnerable, distressed, and not yet an adult. The minor with hair loss should not be “pushed” into any decisions regarding hair restoration, especially surgery, and should be educated and counseled against making any hasty decisions that may not be in his best interest.

And the cost of consulting a physician hair restoration specialist may be less than the cost of multiple ineffective “miracle cures” advertised on the Internet, TV, radio, or in print.
